Basics

This isn’t really karate but more akin to Kung-fu. It is based upon using multiple, lightning fast, strikes to overwhelm your opponent. You are passing up the opportunity to strike with all your might which perhaps will leave you exposed to a counter attack.

This can be drilled as basic techniques to the air with not quite so much emphasis of hip work and pulling for power. An example could be Uchi Uke followed by the same hand then performing a Gedan barai. For karate training we drive the opposite hand out in between the two techniques and do a double hip movement. For fast hand drills there would be no such attempt to move the hip and delay the Gedan barai.

Given the above approach we must be careful when training students as we don’t want them to get into bad habits which can impact on their karate. Therefore we shouldn’t do any “shortened” fast hand drills to the air and restrict our training to partner work.

The simple approach is therefore to combine some techniques when practising to the air and keep a very quick count to encourage the students to speed up and then move onto partner work. See combinations for things for suggested training combinations.

Partner work

You could try a number of sequences which can include locks:

Uke (the attacker and their attack)

Tori (Defender and counter attacker)

Opponent steps through with R/H Jodan Oi Tsuki
